The new order, at the MT level was received at our EV Battery Recycling Technology Centre in Devon, for processing at our scale up line, the only one in the UK. Here we attain data to make informed decisions on mixed feedstocks, scalability and product quality at our planned commercial plants.
What is “black mass”?
- A popular battery in a modern EV is composed of metals including lithium, nickel cobalt and manganese.
- Once a battery reaches the end of its useful life, the battery pack can be collected, dismantled, and shredded. The shredded material is then processed to produce so-called “black mass”, which consists of high amounts of valuable metals.
- The critical cathode material can then be extracted from the black mass at quality for reuse in new batteries. In our Altilitech “direct to cathode active material process” we can recover +95% of these technology metals.
- The ability to recycle batteries gives a domestic supply of critical metals to the UK and reduces its dependence on foreign supply chains. Our circular economy approach reduces the need for virgin raw materials and reduces the carbon footprint by over 38% compared to mining critical metals.
